How To Better Handle Allergies
A MyFoodAllergyTeam Member asked a question 💭

I am having a hard time handling my allergy. Partly because it's rare and people don't think about what it means and partly because alcohol is EVERYWHERE. I have been trying to be better about always telling waiters that their needs to be no alcohol in my food because I am allergic but i still get ignored alot because they believe the "alcohol cooks off" myth. But even if i manage to avoid it in food I often walk into a bathroom and someone has gone crazy spraying deodorant/perfume and I spend… read more

Because of my reactions to many foods, my family avoids restaurants that ignore or don't care about their customers. And it's not so much a myth as a misstatement of facts about the alcohol cooking off, it is possible that what you are allergic to in alcohol is one of the few ingredients that does not dissipate into the air as it cooks. My brother is the same and can not eat anything with cooking cherry because no matter how much it's cooked he comes off drunk. My sister, on the other hand, can have food cooked with it but not drink it as it will make her sick to her stomach and give her headaches to boot. I can only tolerate certain amounts simply because I am allergic to the wheat fermentation process. Most waiters and waitresses enjoy learning how people can be allergic to foods in different manners so explaining a little bit on occasion might help.

Yeah I might need to threaten to sue more often, today I emailed a cosmetic company and asked why I shouldn't sue them since their 0% alcohol deodorant contains alcohol. The pic is half hour after i got a 2% alcohol soap stuck under my wedding ring and i rinsed and scrubbed for several minutes. The skin still died and fell off, took 3 weeks to heal.

My god that’s Awful - I had nt even thought it would affect your skin too - this definitely needs more awareness - I m so sorry that people don’t listen to you - you might have to say - *if you put alcohol in my food - I will bloody die and my family will sue you personally and this restaurant till you are all old and grey! * I don’t know why - but being sued scares people more than bothering to ensure they don’t kill you . I can’t eat white onion - it makes me so ill - not to your standard - but it has hospitalised me - I asked in a resurant not to have the onion gravy over my food - they said ok - I was terribly ill through the night - I went back the next day and asked about the food - they had simply sieved out the onion !!!!!
Sending you much love
