Members shared a wide range of unexpected food allergy symptoms beyond typical reactions, with many surprised by symptoms like brittle nails and hair, severe fatigue, weight gain, mental health impacts such as anxiety and paranoia, and less common reactions like menstrual-like cramping or blood pressure drops. Several members discussed Alpha-gal syndrome from tick bites, which causes severe reactions to mammal products and can include anaphylactic shock, breathing issues, and hives, with some finding that repeated tick exposure prevents reintroduction of these foods. A recurring theme was the frustration of being an outlier whose symptoms or safe foods differ from others with similar conditions, the challenge of hidden allergens like cottonseed oil or cross-contamination in cooking oils, and the life-changing impact of discovering intolerances like gluten or soy after years of unexplained symptoms.

Heartburn was a symptom I thought was because of stress....not...it was an allergy. Amongst other but this one floored me. Weird

Not necessarily a symptom, but being an outlier. Unable to have foods that other people with similar issues can have. Trying treatments that work for other people, but having it make things worse for me.
