Hives that cause bruising. Zyrtec, Benadryl, Prednisone for 8 weeks, as soon as tapering dose starts more hives. Belly, back, arms, head and neck occasionally eyes. Can't get into Allergist for awhile. Anyone else have these problems??

That sounds really exhausting β€” hives that keep coming back as soon as you try to reduce the prednisone, spreading across so much of your body, is a lot to deal with. You're definitely not alone in this struggle.

A MyFoodAllergyTeam member shared something similar: "My breakouts can be from the size of a dime to double the size of my hand. It's a raised rash that has the touch of heat and itches and swells β€” sometimes it looks like it leaves a bruise when it starts going away." Hives that leave bruises behind when they fade can sometimes point to a condition called urticarial vasculitis. This involves inflammation of blood vessels under the skin, causing hives that last longer than 24 hours and leave bruising as they clear. It's worth mentioning this specifically to your doctor. While waiting to see an allergist, here are some important steps to consider:

- Keep a symptom diary β€” track what you eat, when hives appear, and how severe they are. This will be invaluable for your allergist appointment.
- Contact your primary care doctor β€” since the hives return every time prednisone is tapered, your GP needs to know this pattern is continuing.
- Watch for danger signs β€” if hives are accompanied by difficulty breathing, swelling of the throat or tongue, dizziness, or fainting, use an epinephrine auto-injector immediately and call 911. This could indicate anaphylaxis.
- Hives near the eyes β€” swelling around the eyes warrants prompt medical attention, so don't wait on that symptom.

Antihistamines like Zyrtec and Benadryl can help with mild symptoms, but given how persistent and widespread these hives are, staying in close contact with your doctor while waiting for the allergist is really important.
