Soothing Antihistamine Herbal Tea

Medically reviewed by Lisa Booth, RDN
Condition: Food Allergy
Cuisine type: None

Start to finish: 15 minutes

Servings: 2

The combination of herbs has traditionally been used to support the body’s natural response to allergens. It may help reduce histamine reactions, while the steeping method preserves the beneficial compounds.

If you have specific sensitivities to any of these herbs (such as ragweed pollen sensitivity affecting chamomile tolerance), substitute with an alternative herb. For example, replace chamomile with additional nettle or peppermint leaves for a similar calming effect.

If you have histamine intolerance related to your food allergies, go for single-ingredient herbs that are dried, free of moisture, and stored in airtight containers away from heat and light. Steer clear of herbs that smell musty or show signs of moisture.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups filtered water
  • 1 tablespoon dried nettle leaves
  • 1 tablespoon dried chamomile flowers
  • 1 teaspoon dried ginger root
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried turmeric root
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried peppermint leaves
  • 1 teaspoon raw honey (optional)
  • 1 squeeze of fresh lemon juice (optional)

Instructions

  1. Pour 2 cups of filtered water into a kettle or pot.
  2. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat.
  3. While the water heats, place the nettle leaves, chamomile flowers, ginger root, turmeric root, and peppermint leaves into a tea infuser or strainer.
  4. Once the water reaches a rolling boil, carefully pour it over the herbs in your infuser or directly into a teapot if using a strainer.
  5. Allow the tea to steep for 8 to 10 minutes. Longer steeping times increase the potency of the herbal blend.
  6. After steeping, carefully pour the tea through the strainer into your teacup, ensuring all herb particles are filtered out for a smooth drinking experience.
  7. Allow the tea to cool for 1 to 2 minutes before drinking.
  8. If desired, add 1 teaspoon of raw honey or a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, stirring gently to combine.
  9. Sip the tea slowly over 10 to 15 minutes to allow maximum absorption.
