My mother forced me to eat things I am allergic to like tomatoes. She stood over me and forced me to eat them out of grandma's garden. Mom loved watermelon and wanted me to eat it even tho my throat swelled and I could not talk and got asthma. She had no clue about allergy and didn't care what I said. Down in FL allergist gave me allergy shots that contained formaldehyde so keep the pollen fresh!!!!! I was very very sick so they brilliantly decided to quit injecting me. I have 30 food allergies and the roof of my mouth tends to itch in warning.

Did you start avoiding certain foods before your allergy diagnosis without realizing why?

Many people do notice patterns in their eating habits before getting diagnosed. Your body often gives you signals that something isn't right, even if you don't immediately connect it to a food allergy.

Some common experiences include:
* Naturally gravitating away from foods that made you feel unwell
* Developing aversions to certain tastes or textures
* Feeling better when you skipped particular meals or ingredients
* Noticing you "just didn't like" foods that later turned out to be allergens

A MyFoodAllergyTeam member shared that after 15 years of avoiding wheat, rye, barley, oats, and dairy, they realized their system had been trying to tell them something all along. Once they eliminated these foods, they felt so much better that going back wasn't worth it.

Your body's instinct to avoid foods that cause problems is actually a protective mechanism. If you're noticing patterns now, keeping a food journal can help you track what you eat and how you feel afterward, which you can discuss with your healthcare provider.

Oh my goodness! Bless your heart! I am so sorry to hear about such ignorance! She could have unknowingly killed you! Formaldehyde is disgusting and the worst way ever to have injected into a living person! It’s the main reason I quit smoking cigarettes and the odor is atrocious! I took cadaver dissection in college so I know this for a fact! Big hugs!
